One group is about accumulated damage: the DNA inside cells picking up small errors over decades, the protective caps on chromosome ends called telomeres shortening with each cell division, and the cell's internal quality control system for clearing out damaged proteins gradually losing efficiency. A second group is about miscommunication: cells sending confused growth and repair signals to each other, low grade inflammation building in tissues without ever fully resolving, and the bacteria living in the gut shifting out of balance. A third group is about running out of repair capacity: the reserve of stem cells that regenerate tissue thinning out, mitochondria, the structures that produce a cell's energy, losing efficiency, and damaged cells that should die instead lingering in an inflammatory state called senescence.
No single hallmark causes aging on its own, and they feed into each other. Damaged mitochondria produce more of the molecules that harm DNA, which accelerates telomere shortening, which pushes more cells into senescence. That interconnection is why longevity researchers look for habits that touch several hallmarks at once rather than treating any single one as the master switch.
