Key takeaways
Three things to remember
- 01
Metabolic age compares your estimated resting calorie burn with the average for each age, and it is driven mostly by lean mass.
- 02
It is not biological age; it comes from a device formula and swings with hydration, meals, and brand.
- 03
Strength training, enough protein, and modest calorie deficits are the best-supported ways to move the number.
How it works
The Mechanism
Your basal metabolic rate is the energy your body spends just staying alive at rest: breathing, circulating blood, and keeping organs running. Devices estimate it from a few inputs, usually weight, height, age, sex, and a body composition reading from a bioelectrical impedance scale that sends a faint current through the body. The result is then looked up against a table of average rates for each age. The age whose average matches your estimate becomes your metabolic age.
The score mostly tracks how much lean mass you carry. Muscle and organs burn more energy at rest than fat does, so someone with more muscle tends to show a younger number, and someone who has lost muscle tends to show an older one. Resting burn does drift down with age, largely because muscle shrinks, which is why the comparison works at all.
The weak point is the calculation. Each brand uses its own formula and reference table, impedance readings swing with hydration, recent meals, and time of day, and the output is an estimate of an estimate. It is a rough proxy for body composition, not a direct reading of how fast your cells are aging.
In practice
Why It Matters
Useful as a trend line for body composition, unreliable as a verdict on how fast you are aging.
At best, metabolic age is a loose trend line for body composition, and only when you track it on the same scale over weeks rather than reading one number. Because most formulas lean heavily on body weight, losing fat can push the score older even while your health is improving. Watch lean mass, not this number, and lean on measured markers such as VO2 max, grip strength, and blood work for decisions.
Common misconception
Metabolic age is often confused with biological age, the measure of how far your cells and tissues have aged, which is estimated from methods such as DNA methylation. They are different things. Metabolic age is only a comparison of estimated resting calorie burn with age averages, and two different scales can give the same person ages that differ by several years.
Reference ranges
What a Healthy Range Looks Like
A score at or below your calendar age suggests a resting burn at or above the average for your age group. Because formulas differ by device, compare readings from the same scale rather than across brands.
What moves it
How to Improve It
Lift weights. Train major muscle groups 2 to 3 times a week with sets taken close to fatigue; added lean mass raises resting energy use and is the main lever behind a lower score.
Eat enough protein. Aim for roughly 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily to support muscle, especially if you are also eating in a calorie deficit.
Avoid crash dieting. Keep calorie deficits modest, around 10 to 20 percent below maintenance, since aggressive cuts can strip muscle and push the score older.
Measure the same way. Step on the scale at the same time each morning, after using the bathroom and before eating or drinking, and judge the 4 week trend rather than any single reading.
Where to see it
Which Devices Track It
- Tanita
- Tanita coined the term and shows metabolic age on many of its bioelectrical impedance scales, using its own formula and age reference table.
- Renpho
- Renpho smart scales report metabolic age in the app from weight and impedance readings; values are not comparable with other brands.
