Add Protocol widgets to your Home Screen

Widgets put today's brief, your rings and one-tap logging right on your Home Screen, so you can check in or log without opening the app.

About 1 minute iPhone
  1. 1

Touch and hold an empty spot

On your Home Screen, press and hold on the wallpaper, away from any app, until all the icons start to jiggle.

    Got a menu instead?

Holding on an app opens that app's menu. Tap Edit Home Screen there and you'll land in the same place.
  2. 2

    Tap Edit, then Add Widget

Tap the button in the top-left corner. On iOS 26 it's a paintbrush; on iOS 18 it says Edit.

From the menu, choose Add Widget.

  3. 3

    Search for Protocol

The widget gallery opens. Tap Search Widgets, type Protocol, and tap Protocol in the results.

  4. 4

Swipe to pick a widget and size

Swipe left and right to move through Protocol's widgets. Many come in more than one size, and each size is its own page. The dots under the preview show where you are.

When you find one you like, tap Add Widget. Not sure which? Start with the Daily Brief, then see every widget below.

  5. 5

    Place it and tap Done

The widget drops onto your Home Screen. Drag it where you want it, and drop it on another page if you like.

Tap Done (the check mark in the top-right corner). From now on, tapping a widget opens that part of Protocol.

    Want more than one?

Repeat from step 2. Small widgets sit side by side, two to a row.

After it's added

Resize or remove a widget

When you're not editing the Home Screen, touch and hold the widget itself. A menu opens with a row of size buttons at the top.

Tap small or medium and the widget changes size in place. Some widgets also come in large; sizes a widget doesn't have are greyed out. Train widgets come in small and medium.

The same menu has Remove Widget. Removing a widget doesn't touch anything in Protocol.

Tips

Make it yours

Choose what Quick Log or Metric shows

Touch and hold the widget, tap Edit Widget, and pick the action (food, workout, water or coach) or the metric you want.

Add one to your Lock Screen

Touch and hold your Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose Lock Screen, then tap the widget area under the clock and pick Protocol. See the Lock Screen steps.

Stack widgets to save space

In edit mode, drag one widget of the same size on top of another to make a stack, then swipe up and down on it to flip between them.

Jump straight to logging

Buttons on Quick Log, Macros and the Train widgets jump straight to logging, so tap the button, not the card, when you want to log. Here's every way to log a meal.

Rather not look at the screen?

Say “Log water in Protocol” to Siri, or put Log a Workout on your Action button. Log with Siri or set up one-press logging.

Want Train or Meals first in the app, too?

Reorder your tabs and choose the tab Protocol opens on.

Troubleshooting

Protocol isn't in the widget list

Open the Protocol app once (after installing or updating it), then try again. Make sure you're searching on the iPhone where Protocol is installed.

A widget looks empty or out of date

Open Protocol for a moment while signed in. Widgets show the data the app last loaded, and iOS refreshes them on its own schedule through the day.
